Baluba Mask

by Dominic

Baluba masks (from the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) are, in some traditions, vibrant, circular, handcrafted wood-and-metal masks often adorned with cowry shells, beads, and brass. They are historically used in rituals of initiation, to honor deceased aristocracy, and in celebratory ceremonies for welcoming dignitaries.
